Certain Probiotics Found to be Effective for Acute Diarrhea in Children
Certain single strain (Saccharomyces boulardii, LGG, Lactobacillus reuteri, Bifidobacterium lactis, and ECN 1917) and multistrain probiotics can effectively treat acute diarrhea in children, reported a recent study
The key findings were as follows:
- L. reuteri and S. boulardii can reduce the duration of diarrhea, the risk of diarrhea lasting ≥2 days, and the mean stool frequency on day 2.
- Evidence with a low or very low certainty suggested that B. lactis, LGG, and ECN 1917 could shorten the duration of diarrhea.
- For multi-strain probiotics, Lactobacillus species (spp.) plus Bifidobacterium spp. plus Saccharomyces spp (L. spp. + B. spp. + S. spp) showed moderate evidence in decreasing the duration of diarrhea and the mean stool frequency on day 2.
- Only Bacillus spp. plus Enterococcus spp. plus Clostridium spp (Bacillus spp. + E. spp. + C. spp.) could reduce the duration of vomiting with moderate evidence.
- Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii) was effective in reducing the duration of diarrhea (compared with placebo) and the risk of diarrhea lasting ≥2 days, with moderate evidence.
