Yoga Has Significant Positive Effects on Asthma Control in Children

A recent study published in the ‘Indian Journal of Pediatrics’ found that yoga has positive effects on lung functioning and improves asthma control in children. This hospital-based interventional randomized controlled trial involved 140 children with newly diagnosed asthma,   to assess the effect of yoga on control of asthma in children with bronchial asthma.

The key findings were as follows:

  • The asthmatic children practicing yoga have shown significant improvement in Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume1,(FEV1), FEV1/FVC and Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR).
  • FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC and PEFR values were better when compared to control groups which received only pharmacological treatment.
  • ediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ). T was statistically significantly better when compared to controls.

The results of the study imply that yoga therapy can be recommended as an adjuvant in management of asthma along with standard pharmacological management.
